Secrets to Improve Your Deep Snow Performance
Recent research out of Sweden has disclosed some new information that we can also apply to our existing snow vehicles to make them perform better in deep/soft snow. Although some of this material is contrary to commonly held beliefs, we have conducted our own tests and absolutely believe the following as valid and useful.
- Move the load as far forward on the machine as possible. Although we have long thought a centered load was the most desirable, it has now been proven that weighting the nose keeps the snow vehicle's angle of attack flatter and improves performance.
- Keep the bottom of the snow vehicle smooth and free from obstructions that would cause friction or resistance on the snow. The early Thiokol Imps were a great example of a smooth bottom and it is now coincidence they were also known for their excellent deep snow performance! If you have a snow vehicle with axels exposed along the bottom of your under carriage, you might seriously consider bolting a flat sheet of 1/8" aluminum over them to provide a smooth sliding surface.
